About Herkimer Diamonds:  Herkimer diamond is a special name for specific double-terminated quartz crystals, which were first discovered in exposed outcrops of dolostone at Little Falls in Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. They are sometimes referred to as Little Falls Diamond and Middleville Diamond. These quartz crystals, which geologists theorize formed extremely slowly in small solution cavities or vugs, have 18 facets (6 sides) and two terminations.

A double terminated quartz crystal means that instead of having a point on one end, the crystal has a point on both ends and they are very rare. Herkimer diamonds have the hexagonal habit of a quartz crystal but with double termination points. A Herkimer diamond is the hardest of all clear quartz crystals. It falls at about 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, running a close race with a real diamond, and is capable of scratching glass. In comparison, man made steels barely score a 7 on the hardness scale. Herkimer diamonds are highly sought by mineral collectors worldwide.

Metaphysical Properties: All grades of Herkimer Diamonds are useful for metaphysical pursuits. The Herkimer Diamond is called the "stone of attunement". While it is not actually diamond, it is a quartz that often resembles the sparkling clarity of diamonds. It can be metaphysically programmed to attune one to an environment, a situation, a quality, or most anything. It is said to assist with balance on the mental, emotional and physical levels. Rarity: Uncommon due to limited location. There are similar terms for quartz in other locations, but they do not possess all of the same characteristics.

 

Herkimer Diamond Grades: A true diamond is one of the hardest elements known to man, at 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Herkimer Diamonds are harder than all quartz crystals. They fall at about 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, giving the real diamond a close race. For comparative purposes, many man-made steels barely score a seven on the hardness scale.

Herkimer Diamonds are also found with solid inclusions. The most common of these is a coal-like substance called “anthraxolite”. Anthraxolite often occurs inside the pockets where Herkimer Diamonds are formed, giving the pockets a solid black appearance. The locality of the anthraxolite both inside and outside of the crystal, suggests it was present before, during, and after the crystals were forming.

The grades of Herkimer diamonds sold here fall into four grades.  Regardless of the clarity of the Herkimer diamond you choose, all grades of Herkimer Diamonds are useful for metaphysical pursuits and possess the same properties.  The higher grades are pretty, useful for jewelry and used by preference for appearance.  A Grade D Herkimer Diamond will enhance your spiritual attunement just as equally as a Grade AA.

The diamonds that fall into this category are almost perfect. There are few minor flaws such as very small attachment marks and inclusions. The flaws should not exceed more than 10% of the diamond and do not take away from the overall clarity of the diamond and both termination points are present.

The diamonds that fall into this category will have some flaws like larger contact or attachment marks, inclusions or fractures. There may be small termination point damage. These flaws should not exceed more than 25% of the overall diamond. Most of the diamond is still sparkling and somewhat clear.

These diamonds have extreme cloudiness from internal fractures, larger attachment marks and inclusions, and missing or damaged termination points. Theses flaws should not exceed more than 40% of the diamond and All Diamonds should have at least one good termination point.

 

 Grade D or Construction Quality - $10.00 (includes shipping)

The "Diamonds" that fall into this category are very rough grade Diamonds or Pieces. They are very cloudy from internal fractures, missing termination points, large contact marks and inclusions. Theses flaws will exceed more than 40% of the Diamond.
